What is a white Miniature Schnauzer? In fact, the white Miniature Schnauzer comes out of the Black Miniature Schnauzer, like a freak of nature. Therefore, we must conclude that the term "White" is not correct. Because the color of the coat isn't white, but black without color, that apparently gives the color white. A statement we hear often is that then it must be an albino. That is a misunderstanding.  However it is quite understandable why people think of this idea as directly after the birth, it’s nose’s front is pink and that gives a the pup it his totality a pink impression. Just a short time after the birth (a question of hours), the pigmentation starts to work and the pink skin of the  pup slowly changes into the color black ( including the front of the nose) Later on the nails change from a light gray into black. This is a sign that the pigment is already there.  The palate also slowly changes to dark, and the eyes turn into dark brown in color.

 

 

This indicates that there are really amino acids (tyrosine) present. These take care , among others, of the forming of melanin and the generation of pigment. If the amino acids were not present, then the pigmentation could not be generated and in this case one could speak of albinism, which is not the case. For example in rabbits it is a regular , frequent phenomenon to see red eyes . This is a well-known sign of the missing pigment In the winter, when the sun is less strong, the general pigmentation is  less black, a logical result of the fact that sunlight has influence on the forming of pigment. This also happens to people, otherwise it isn't explicable why in the summer the beaches are so full of people.

 

 

Margrit Roloff in her book: “Zwergschnauzer, ein Hund für Kenner”  talks about this fact, that under influence of light the skin will turn black on the feet, testicles, and nose front. This is because these parts of the body belong to the  warmth/coldregulationsystem. Against the perspiration system, the pigmentation itself should behave like a defensive mechanism against too much sunlight. In people, this is also a recognizable phenomena. The belief that White Miniature Schnauzers in the summer quickly have trouble of the sun is a complete misunderstanding. Some White Miniature Schnauzers, in the summer have even darker skins than the Black Miniature Schnauzer. Therefore we can conclude, that the Miniature Schnauzer has on its own, a very good protection against too much sunlight.

 

 

Because of his black coat, the Black Miniature doesn't need as much protection against the sun (rather against heat, because black takes heat quickly) as the White Miniature Schnauzer, who likes to lay in the sun. Researchers have found that the White Miniature Schnauzers (let's use the color white), have a gene in their coat, that blocks the color black. They are  genes  Cd en Cc.

 

 

Both genes have no other influence on the Miniature Schnauzers, not on their type, not on their character. Which means that the pure Schnauzer type stays!! This is a totally normal phenomenon in the animal world, with examples like the Polar Bear, the Snow Hare, and other "white" dogs. Other animals of the same species see them as absolutely normal. Not normal animals are quickly rejected out of the herd.  Often asked questions like: Do White Schnauzers get often sick? Are they inclined to deafness? or Do they have inborn disorders? Here we would answer no with a clear conscience.

 

 

White Miniature Schnauzers are totally normal Schnauzers, with the, by this breed belong property's, and it's not for nothing that the  FCI this beautiful variety has approved. Because there is relative not so much, good breeding material, there could be, for interested breeders, a lot of  "type" winning to score. Since Margrit Roloff, 25 years ago made a point of getting better at the white variety, there have been good results scored. But we aren't there yet...... And there could be a lot more we could score..... Is this only in the case of the Whites?
